Albie Sachs was active from the age of 17 in the resistance to apartheid, first imprisoned and later blown up by a bomb placed in his car by South African security agents. He became a leading member of the Constitutional Committee of the African National Congress during the period when the new democratic constitution ˆ with a progressive and comprehensive Bill of Rights ˆ was adopted. After the first democratic election in 1994 he was appointed by President Nelson Mandela to serve on the newly established Constitutional Court. He retired in 2009.
